2019 surfing Hall of Fame inductee Kai Lenny recently completed a remote beach cleanup on the northern coast of Maui which pulled 8,000 pounds of trash from the coast. The cleanup, centered around the famed surf break Jaws, brought 40 volunteers together to clean up the remote beaches which are inaccessible to traditional cleanup crews. Volunteers swam to the beaches from offshore boats and loaded trash into special sacks, which were then flown off the beaches by helicopter.
The accompanying video might be instagram influencer quality, but that doesn’t mean you need to have a camera crew with you to do the same. There are numerous organizations around the U.S. which organize beach cleanups just like this one. Check out the Surfrider Foundation or look up “Beach cleanups near me” to get involved. Ultimately, beach cleanups are a bandaid to a larger, more pervasive problem. Yet, by getting involved and working to improve your environment, you send a message to policymakers and your community that this is an issue worth addressing.
