Chamonix’s Iconic Periades Bivy Collapses

Chamonix's Iconic Periades Hut collapsed after rockfall last week. PGHM photo.

Chamonix, France is the Disneyland of extreme skiing. Unfortunately, thanks to extensive permafrost degradation, melting glaciers, and extremely high average summertime temperatures, the rock in these mountains is beginning to crumble. Each year, we’ve seen and heard more and more massive rock falls that take out entire climbing routes, stretch tram cables, and cause all-around mayhem in the mountains. The latest news out of Cham is sad yet again, as the iconic Periades Bivouac was reported to have collapsed after rockfall on August 1.

The tiny wooden hut is located at an altitude of 3421 meters, and was first built in 1925. It was used as a refuge for climbers and skiers approaching lines on the far side of the Vallee Blanche. Check out what Seb Montaz has to say about this magical place.
