Outdoor companies have long supported charities that maintain the natural resources where consumers use their products but Santa Cruz Bicycles has just raised the bar. Just this week, Santa Cruz announced the PayDirt Fund, a $1 Million commitment over three years to support mountain bike trail development worldwide.
The PayDirt Fund builds on Santa Cruz’s past efforts to donate and help fundraise trail development, which is chronically underfunded in comparison to many other outdoor activities. Santa Cruz has been working with the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz, and San Vicente Redwoods Trails for years to aid trail maintenance and development. Santa Cruz has also lent their support through Factory Racing Dig Days where their in-house team work elbow-to-elbow with local groups on trails.

Santa Cruz sees the PayDirt Fund as a way to expand their giving reach outside of California and the west coast. The fund is also set apart by its system of providing grants. Any individual, organization, or project can apply directly on Santa Cruz’s website and the requirements are fairly loose allowing Santa Cruz to help as many different groups as possible. While applications will be reviewed regularly, a committee will come together every three months to make allocations. Santa Cruz intends to prioritize projects that build community and they hope the grants will have wide ranging impact beyond trail development.
