Don’t hang up your sticks just yet. There’s still plenty of snow to chase, and April might just be the sleeper month of the season. If you’re itching for late-season turns, these are your best bets across North America this month.
April can be a glorious time to ski — deep spring snow, bluebird skies, and short lift lines. The key is targeting resorts with high elevations, north-facing slopes, or just straight-up massive snowpacks. Bonus: there’s a fresh storm rolling in.
Here’s where you should consider heading right now:
1. Mammoth Mountain, California
Mammoth just scored a three-foot refresh and is famous for its long seasons — skiing in August isn’t unheard of. With world-class terrain parks and a rowdy après scene, it’s spring skiing in its purest form.
2. Alyeska, Alaska
Forecasts are calling for 37 inches of new snow in the next few days. Spring? Not in Alaska. If you didn’t get your fill of powder this season, this is the place to chase those final face shots.
3. Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia
Whistler’s about to get dumped on, with over two feet of fresh snow in the forecast. While summer glacier skiing has become less reliable, April is delivering the goods — and the steeps are calling.
4. Timberline Lodge, Oregon
Timberline’s getting in on the action too, with snow expected this week. Don’t sleep on the Pacific Northwest. This region has staying power well into spring and even summer on the Palmer Snowfield.
5. Palisades Tahoe, California
Open until Memorial Day, Palisades is a spring skiing classic. Come for the slushy bump runs, stay for the legendary pond skim and wild spring energy. Like Mammoth, it delivers some of California’s best spring turns.
Bottom line:
The season is far from over. If you’re craving powder, don’t walk — run — to the Northwest (and maybe book that flight to Alaska). Spring is the secret season, and the best turns might still be ahead.
