How Can I Make Wheel Spinners for a Bicycle?

A wheel spinner for a bicycle looks like a thin hub cap. A design is cut in the wheel spinner to give the illusion of spokes turning while the bicycle is ridden. A minimum of five spokes and a maximum of nine fit easily inside a wheel spinner with a diameter from 12 inches up. Make a 16-inch wheel spinner using 10- to 18-gauge metal sheeting. Metal sheeting is available in mild steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, brass, nickel silver and silver.Instructions1.Measure the bicycle wheel from the center of the wheel at the bolt to the outside edge of the bicycle rim. This is the radius of the bicycle rim. Cut a piece of string 4 inches longer than the measurement. Tie one end of the string around a push pin. Tie the opposite end of the string around a pencil. Measure the string to make sure the distance between the push pin and the pencil is the same distance between the center of the wheel and the outside edge of the bicycle rim.2.Multiply the measurement taken for the radius of the wheel by two to get the diameter. Move the pencil toward the outside of the paper until the string is taught. Draw a circle around the push pin with the pencil. Make sure to keep the string taut. Remove the push pin and place a mark where it was located.4.Draw a 2-inch circle around the center mark. Draw a circle 1-inch in from the outer circle edge to form a rim for the wheel spinner.. These two areas will not have a design drawn in them. They are used for stability once the wheel spinner is cut.5.Draw the wheel spinner design inside the circle making sure to stay above the center circle and below the 1-inch rim area. Draw five spokes and place them evenly around the circle. Make sure to draw each spoke a minimum of 1 inch wide. Two possible designs are lightening bolts or flames. Cut out the marked areas between the spokes. Use the cut out paper wheel spinner as a paper pattern or template.7.Lay the paper template on a piece of 10-gauge aluminum making sure aluminum is visible along the entire edge of the outer circle. Tape the template into place so it will not move.8.Use a pencil and trace around the outside circle and inside each cut out area. Remove the paper template and connect the lines where the tape had been.9.Drill a hole in each area to be cut out in-between the spokes. Use a drill bit that is slightly larger than the scroll-saw blade.10.Use a scroll saw and cut on the outer circle line. Proceed slowly and accurately. Reattach the scroll saw blade. Cut along the line until the entire area is free from the surrounding aluminum. Unhook the scroll saw blade and remove the scrap aluminum. Repeat the process until a total of five spoke areas have been cut and removed.12.Measure the diameter of the bolt in the center of the bicycle wheel. Locate a drill bit slightly larger than the bolt. Drill a hole in the center mark on the wheel spinner. This is how the wheel spinner is connected to the bicycle tire.13.Use a flat file and fill all cut edges. Remove any metal burs.
