Japan’s Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort is showing how drone tech isn’t just for tasty powder edits anymore—it’s becoming a real tool for ski patrol.
In a recent video, Nozawa Onsen revealed how drones are helping them tackle everything from daily inspections to avalanche response. The mini-doc raises a solid question: Are drones the next frontier in mountain safety?
Ski patrol isn’t going anywhere, but drones are proving to be a powerful supplement. According to Katsuya Noguchi, a senior expert at JDRONE Inc., the resort has “been able to address operational challenges and move toward achieving stable daily inspections,” adding that the technology is “contributing significantly to both slope safety and staff support.”
From a cost and risk perspective, drones make a lot of sense. Avalanche detection, lift tower inspections, and terrain monitoring can now be done from the air (without a very expensive helicopter) keeping patrollers out of harm’s way until boots-on-the-ground action is absolutely necessary. With infrared sensors, drones can even help locate buried skiers faster than traditional methods.
The slightly sci-fi twist? Drones at Nozawa are also being tested with loudspeakers to deter skiers and riders from going out-of-bounds. Yep—an automated voice hovering overhead, telling you to turn around. Creepy? Maybe. But if it keeps someone from triggering a slide, it's hard to argue with.
Then again, here’s a thought: Don’t duck the rope.
