Zauchensee Women’s Super-G Cancelled Due to Excessive Wind

With only two stops left, the Super-G cancellation is shortening the rope on Olympic qualification.

Zauchensee, Austria, where American Lindsay Vonn claimed her 84th downhill win over the weekend, was supposed to continue on with a Super-G race. Extreme winds threw a wrench into the event and FIS organizers deemed the track unsafe for competition. Gusts on the course exceeded safety limits during inspections, and despite delays and hopeful monitoring of the forecast, organizers ultimately pulled the plug.

The cancelation may have serious consequences for Super-G racers on the bubble of Olympic qualification. With only two Super-G's left on the calendar before the Olympic cutoff, it's down to the wire.

A single cancellation can be the difference between an Olympic appearance and staying home.

Super-G points not only factor into discipline rankings, but also play a role in national selection criteria for several teams. With only a handful of races remaining before the Olympic pause, losing one outright could leave some athletes with no realistic path to climb the standings.

Should the organizers replace the cancelled race, Tarvisio, Italy, this week may be their best bet.
