World Surf League Teams Up With Scientists to Save Our Oceans

World Surf League (WSL) has just announced a new philanthropic branch dedicated to giving back to the ocean. PURE - Progressive Understanding and Respect for the Environment - is a new partnership WSL has formed with Columbia University in order to spur a global movement amongst the surfing community and beyond to protect the oceans.

The first order of business for WSL has been to joined forces with Columbia University’s Earth Institute and contribute a starting $1.5 million to Lamont-Doherty researchers, the lead research team in issues like ocean health and ecosystems, ocean acidification, sea-level rise, and the role the oceans play in climate change. All of the scientific findings will be shared publicly and transparently.

Through the provision of educational opportunities and collaboration between scientists and the surfing community, this new partnership hopes to encourage communities to find ways to change things like pollution, overfishing, and climate change causes in order to protect the oceans we all love, and depend on.
