Wolf Attacks Camper In Banff National Park

A lone wolf attacked a camper inside a tent last Friday in an extraordinarily rare show of aggression. The attack occurred at 1 a.m at the packed Rampart Creek Campground off Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park, with the wolf biting the camper’s arm and hand through the tent. After nearby campers scared off the animal, the victim reported the incident and was transported to the hospital. An inspection of the tent and immediate vicinity showed no sign of any animal attractants, and wildlife officials soon tracked down the animal one kilometer south of the campsite.

After the animal was euthanized, genetic samples were taken to ensure it was the correct wolf. Once this confirmation has been made, the animal will be examined to determine its condition at the time of attack. The Rampart Creek Campground will be closed until the investigation is complete as a precautionary measure.
