Winter Park Council Approves First Step in Master Development Plan
Popular Stories
On July 15, Winter Park town council members approved the first final development plan for the mountain's base area. The long-term redevelopment project is led by Alterra Mountain Company and the Winter Park Recreational Association.
The plan will transform 15 acres between the Resort and Welcome Village areas with new accommodations and 35,000 square feet of commercial space. The plan preserves almost four acres of land as recreational open space, and hopes to generate temporary jobs during construction as well as permanent resort positions when the renovations are finished.
The council approved a preliminary development plan on June 3, creating the literal foundation for this latest approval, as it detailed the rezoning of all 177 acres in the base area. As such, each phase of the redevelopment will require further council approval before movingforward.
Sustainability Resolutions
Council members approved three resolutions aimed at advancing Winter Park’s carbon-neutral goals.
The council awarded a contract to Lotus Engineering to orient its climate goals. The contract's responsibilities include analyzing potential greenhouse gas reduction, developing climate action strategies, and to creating a "climate vulnerability risk assessment."
The council also gave GreyEdge Group LLC the go-ahead to investigate geothermal as a possible clean energy heating system.
Finally, the council approved a Letter of Intent that allows the town to begin seeking grant opportunities with the State of Colorado for transportation and sustainability efforts.
Special Event Permits Approved
In addition to sustainability concerns, the meetings also approved three upcoming special event permits.
