Under normal circumstances, a big swell at Teahupo'o is heralded by the arrival of a significant portion of the world's professional surfers. When the sets start rolling in, there may be some locals in the lineup, but camera lenses are firmly focused on the big names.
However, when a recent swell hit Tahiti, COVID-19 travel restrictions prevented jet-setting surfers from showing up. Cameras were still on the scene, but instead of superstars, they were shooting local rippers. However, French Polynesia has begun lightening lockdown restrictions, so soon enough surf media will be back to ignoring local surfers.
