Throwback: The World Surf League’s Sketchiest Event of All Time

Back in 2007, the world's best (male) professional surfers assembled in Arica, a port city in northern Chile to compete in the 2007 Rip Curl Search Chile. The event's break, known as "El Gringo," is a dangerous slab atop an urchin-encrusted reef; not exactly ideal conditions for surfing.

Nonetheless, the surfers competed without reservation, leading to some mind-bending makes, as well as some scary slams onto the shallow, spiky reef. The late surf legend Andy Irons eventually came away with the victory, edging out the likes of Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning to put himself back in overall title contention.
