Surfing in Iran: A Story That Could Change Women’s Worlds

Surfing is not a popular sport in the Middle East–especially not in Iran. In the remote region of Baluchestan, Iran, the sport of surfing is being changed forever as Irish pro surfer Easkey Britton teaches Iranian snowboarder Mona Seraji, and an Iranian swimmer and diver, Shalha Yasini, how to make history as the first women to surf in Iran.

With the help of filmmaker Marion Poizeau and Waves of Freedom–a non-profit that promotes change-makers using surfing–Poizeau's documentary, Into the Sea, will help spread the word on the empowering differences these women will be making within the surfing community, and will help to change the limited roles women are allowed to play in Iranian culture in general.

The video shows people's reactions to watching Easkey Britton surfing in southeastern Iran, all while she honors the  tradition of keeping a women's hair covered the entire time–despite being in the ocean.

We cracked the Iron Curtain with a bottle of Coca Cola.
We can perhaps open this Iron Fist with a surf board!

We can perhaps tear off this “Suffocating Veil” with a surf board!
