Few West Coast surf breaks hold the hallowed place in surf lore as that of Santa Cruz's Steamer Lane. Hell, this is the spot where the modern incarnation of the leash and wetsuit were formulated by Jack O'Neill; this is even the break where O'Neill iconically lost his eye. Throughout the ages it's been a California proving ground for the up-and-coming surfer, as well as one of the most spectacular places to watch people shred from the safety of the nearby lighthouse and surf museum.
