This upcoming weekend marks a seminal moment in the World Surf League's history–the company will broadcast the first-ever Founders' Cup of Surfing live on CBS from Kelly Slater's Surf Ranch. How it turns out remains to be seen.
Will the constant, sterile perfection of the waves being served to the competitors at the press of a button become monotonous after a while? How will mainstream audiences react to the, uh, distinct style of surf commentators and color analysts? Will this herald a new era of surf contests getting the type of live coverage that snow events like the Dew Tour and the Toyota Grand Prix receive? Will wave pools begin sprouting up all across inland America? Will the winner take his prize money, use it to move to Oahu's North Shore the year before college, and fall in love with a beautiful local despite being a haole?
Who knows, only time will tell. But what we do know is that Conner Coffin and Griffin Colapinto recently paid a visit to the Surf Ranch, and if this seven-minute montage of the Californians tearing Kelly's creation to shreds doesn't at least pique your interest for the weekend's contest, I don't know what to tell you.
