When Wade Goodall and Shane Fletcher set out to capture the Australian surf scene in Pentacoastal, they did it in the only way they knew how: from deep inside. The resulting film, a hybrid between arthouse flick and surf porn, features some truly wild surfing and an intimate look into the soul of surfing in the Southern Hemi. In their words, it’s a “recollection of Australasian exploration following a quasi-recursive map, with elemental moments of expressive wave worship.”
In this look behind the scenes of the film, we see some of the challenges of shooting surfing in weird conditions to avoid crowds at a popular break. The crew was forced to surf at dead-low tide, causing filmer Shane Fletcher’s knees to get a little banged up from the reef only inches below him.
