Anderson Cooper to Explore Nazaré This Week on 60 Minutes

In 2011, big wave legend Garret McNamara was towed into a 78-foot monster swell off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal. At the time it was the largest wave ever ridden, and needless to say, it shocked people around the world. Most recoiled in fear, others watched with queasiness, and a select few waxed up their boards and hopped on a flight to Lisbon. Since McNamara’s historic ride, Nazaré has turned into the world’s premier big wave destination, and every winter some of the best surfers flock to the Portuguese coast to catch some bombs and try their luck at beating a World Record.

This week on 60 Minutes, Anderson Cooper will visit Nazaré and spend his afternoon on the back of Garret’s jet ski as the pair zip around the big wave zone and discuss what it’s like to surf a wall of water the size of a 10 story building, and what it is that motivates these surfers to do it. Tune in Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CBS to watch.

For centuries the ancient town of Nazaré was thought of only as a small fishing village along the Portuguese coast, if thought of at all. That all changed in 2011 when big wave legend and surf pioneer Garrett McNamara recorded himself with a GoPro riding down the face of a 78-foot behemoth within spitting distance of the town’s historic lighthouse. Since then, the once quiet town has been flooded by surfers and the town’s economy has been revitalized. Related: Rent or Download Andy Irons:
