Anderson Cooper to Explore Nazaré This Week on 60 Minutes

In 2011, big wave legend Garret McNamara was towed into a 78-foot monster swell off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal. At the time it was the largest wave ever ridden, and needless to say, it shocked people around the world. Most recoiled in fear, others watched with queasiness, and a select few waxed up their boards and hopped on a flight to Lisbon. Since McNamara’s historic ride, Nazaré has turned into the world’s premier big wave destination, and every winter some of the best surfers flock to the Portuguese coast to catch some bombs and try their luck at beating a World Record.

This week on 60 Minutes, Anderson Cooper will visit Nazaré and spend his afternoon on the back of Garret’s jet ski as the pair zip around the big wave zone and discuss what it’s like to surf a wall of water the size of a 10 story building, and what it is that motivates these surfers to do it. Tune in Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CBS to watch.

Indigenous Surfer and Shaper Jalaan Slabb is Making Waves

One could say that Jalaan Slabb lives her life similar to the waves she surfs every day. It’s always fluid. Somedays she’s out on the water surfing, and others she’s busy tinkering away in her shaping bay creating surfboards. Recently the 16-year-old crafted a surfboard for two-time World Champion Tyler Wright. However, the throughline that connects everything she does is her love for the land and the ocean. As an indigenous woman from the Coodjinburra clan of Bundjalung nation, Jalaan uses
