The scene was electric at the Oi Rio Pro as fifty-thousand fans crowded the beach to watch the men’s and women’s finalists duke it out in the Saquarema beach break. On the women’s side we saw 5x world champion Carissa Moore face Johanne Defay in a dramatic final. For the majority of the thirty-five-minute heat it seemed that Johanne had the world champ right where she wanted her. However, a last-minute set wave offered Carissa a window of opportunity to overcome what had been a challenging heat for her. With less than a minute left on the clock, Carissa scored a stellar 9.50 and shot past Johanne for her 24th career win in the championship tour. Carissa continues to stack up accolades on what is already one of the most successful careers in the history of the WSL championship tour.
In the men’s final we saw two Brazilian Surfers competing for glory in front of their home crowd. Veteran Filipe Toledo and rookie Sammy Pupa both brought their A-games for this event. Filipe wasted no time as he sent a huge 360 off his backside and slotted in a perfect 10 within ten minutes of the start of the heat. He went on to beat out his competition with a monster combined score of 18.67, clinching his 12th career win and third win in a row at the Oi Rio Pro. Toledo has his sights set on his first world championship with only three events left in the tour. The next stop of this year’s tour is the Corona Open J-Bay in South. We all can’t wait to see who’s going to bring it this time around.
