Alex Lopez Demonstrates Lost Art of Turning

Up-and-coming Bend talent Alex Lopez shows off his Craig-Kelly-esque, surfy style at his home mountain, Mount Bachelor. Despite a tough season in Oregon, this short, two-minute clip reveals that there are still some good turns to be had.

Son of big wave surfing legend Gerry Lopez, Alex quite obviously inherited his father's world-famous turning ability and brought it to Bachelor's undulating terrain.

It's incredibly refreshing to see an edit with great turning, and nothing more. If you can't relate to guys hitting urban features, jibs, cheese wedges, and the like, take a few minutes to watch this young gun remind you of how fun it is to turn a snowboard.

As an instructor I see so much wrong with this: “surfer knee” bending the trailing knee in which limits range of extension/flexion, opening of the upper body especially the arms and shoulders, etc.  But like I always said, I play the AASI game for work, not for fun.  Terrain, features, experience, and personal style of course always come in to play.  I applaud this for what it is: a rider that is capable and stylish like Craig was, just like Jeremy Jones is, and what we need as a refresher for what this sport is about.  Rip on, buddy.  Slay it like only a true artist would and leave your mark like we all wish we could.

It’s nice and soft, but unfortunately you can’t really ride like that when you ride in a small resort and there’s other people riding! I love taking huge and soft turns on powder day!

Nothing wrong with the “surfer knee”.  Alex Lopez is surfing the mountain with style. Can be done even at small resorts. Not just big wide open powder runs.

You’re right! I just feel like riding right now!

Me too!  Storm just missed Summit County last night. Got to make the best out of whatever we have to ride.

Yeah, that’s kind of fucked up! I live in Quebec Canada and it’s beautiful today, there’s not a lot of snow but it’s not over, im going to skate since the streets are kinda clean right now!
