Video Surfaces of Ski Mountaineers Surviving Avalanche

Riding the backcountry is one of life's great natural pleasures. Exquisite views, untracked lines, and the promise of adventure lure many of us out of bounds every day. Videos like this, however, remind us that the backcountry, while beautiful, can turn tragic in less than a second. Risk is a factor in even the most stable snow and weather conditions. Being trained and prepared before heading out into the wild is often the difference between a lovely, safe day out and having calling search and rescue. heli-rescue.

This clip, courtesy of Alec Finke, reminds us that despite our best intentions, things can always turn sour in the mountains. Mother nature could care less about us, particularly when we don't approach the outdoors with proper respect. Accidents, of course, happen unexpectedly.

So-- if you need reminding-- please be smart (if only just then) when heading out into the backcountry. Click here for more resources.
