New Zealand's high alpine is just about as gnarly as anywhere else on the planet, but isn't as well-represented in snowsports media as comparable terrain in the Northern Hemisphere. It's unclear exactly why that is, but we'd guess that it has something to do with the hemisphere thing. Or maybe Kiwis are just better at keeping their favorite backcountry spots under the radar. Starring Anna Smoothy, Janina Kuzma, and Ayako Kuroda, The North Face's EAST WEST isn't exactly a piece likely to drum up the region's tourism, showing NZ's Southern Alps in a fairly unflattering light. Nonetheless, even a sufferfest can make for an entertaining video, as clearly evidenced here.
