VIDEO: Crossing New Zealand’s Southern Alps in The North Face’s “EAST WEST”

New Zealand's high alpine is just about as gnarly as anywhere else on the planet, but isn't as well-represented in snowsports media as comparable terrain in the Northern Hemisphere. It's unclear exactly why that is, but we'd guess that it has something to do with the hemisphere thing. Or maybe Kiwis are just better at keeping their favorite backcountry spots under the radar. Hard to say, but whatever the reason, we're stoked to see a new project featuring some of New Zealand's most forbidding terrain.

Starring Anna Smoothy, Janina Kuzma, and Ayako Kuroda, The North Face's EAST WEST isn't exactly a piece likely to drum up the region's tourism, showing NZ's Southern Alps in a fairly unflattering light. Nonetheless, even a sufferfest can make for an entertaining video, as clearly evidenced here.

100-year businesses don't exist. The retail industry is dead. In the rugged White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, neither of those statements are true. North America’s oldest ski shop, Lahout’s, has remained open 365 days a year since 1920. While e-commerce and conglomerates have stripped the country of local, independent retailers, a family of Lebanese immigrants have prevailed for a century, beating the Great Depression, World War II, the Dot Com Crash and the Great Recession. Get Hyped for Winter with Todd Ligare’s AK Edit

It snowed an inch last night, and we’d be lying if we said skiing wasn’t on the brain. Thankfully, Todd Ligare’s newest AK edit is the perfect thing to hold us over until the lifts start spinning. It’s a no-frills kind of edit, with Sierra Nevada athlete Todd Ligare going full throttle on one Alaskan spine after the next. Hot damn, Ligare, what did you have for breakfast that day? Jet fuel?
