For anyone who’s ever skied in Grand Teton National Park, the latest episode of Cody Townsend’s The Fifty might seem familiar. Wake up in the dark, slog up Garnet Canyon, become overwhelmed by the beauty of the mountains above you at sunrise, continue the slog to whatever objective you may have, and then proceed to rip the sh*t out of said objective. Then do it all in reverse. Days in GTNP are usually big, but do it right, and they can be the most rewarding skiing you can imagine.
After a bit of a summer break, Cody’s groundbreaking series returns with a new episode (full disclosure: this was filmed last season) with some new characters: Mark and Janelle Smiley – two local Jackson crushers that attempted a similar feat a few years ago. Over the course of several years, the Smileys made an attempt on the 50 classic climbs of North America – the inspiration to the 50 classic ski descents.
In this episode, Mark joins Cody and Bjarne on a jaunt up the Middle Teton – perhaps one of the most aesthetic and freeride-able lines in the collection.
