Switzerland ski trip! ... in Hyvinkaa

A quick set of runs in Switzerland... of Hyvinkää. Small local hill. I was here as a kid long time ago and it looked different. I only now understand why... they moved it :-)

I needed to visit Hyvinkää during the weekend, and realised that I could at the same time stop at the local ski hill, and get some much needed exercise. The last time I was skiing here when I was maybe 10 and my dad took me there.

Chatting to one of the local skiers on the hill I learned that the old site with ski jumps and a ski hill had been closed down, and the new ski area is in a different location further away from the city. That explains.

The next day I returned to see again the old hill. Could it be skied, even without a lift? And yes, this was much more the place that I remembered. The Hyvinkään Sveitsi hotel... the ski hut... the narrow valley into which we skied. While the ski hut has been converted to a hotel/restaurant ("Sveitsin Maja"), not much of the actual old ski hill remains. Forest has taken over the slopes, except for the landing slope for the ski jump. The ski jump tower is gone, however. Fortunately, there's some fresh snow and I can ski the landing slope!

These are the pictures from the old ski hill:

And here are the pictures from the new ski hill:

Watch: This Might Be A New Olympic Sport

Hey, I didn’t come up with those, just repeating every single chairlift conversation I’ve ever heard whenever a telemarker passes below the lift. That could soon become the latest winter Olympic sport, after FIS announced pushing to include telemark parallel sprinting into the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. Well, if you’ve never even heard of the sport, neither have we, but it seems to be a big enough deal in certain circles to warrant inclusion. Take a look at the somewhat bizarre combination

Benjamin Forthun Takes Pond Skimming to a Whole New Level

When it comes to pond skimming, there is a certain level of debauchery that is usually to be expected: silly costumes, ruckus cheers, and just a wee bit (or a lot) of beer. Norwegian skier Benjamin Forthun, however, has taken the pastime to a whole new level with his epic run at FONNA Glacier Ski Resort for the start of their summer season. Talk about crushing the game.

What Happens When Pro Big Wave Surfers Go Heli Boarding?

Skills translate across sports, don’t they? That’s exactly what Big Wave Surf champions Paige Alms and Billy Kemper set out to discover when they took a trip to Alaska’s Chugach Range to go heli-boarding. Lucky for them, pro snowboarders Robin Van Gyn and Leanne Pelosi, as well as Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso were there to share some knowledge. Sharing skills in the mountains is one of the best parts of being there, and these pros have a lot to share. The surfers learn and feed off the
