Typical ski film formula for a big line: five-seconds of skiers booting up couloir + five-seconds of skier getting stoked atop huge line + 20-seconds of ripping high speed turns and rocketing out onto the glacier below.
When we see those huge ski lines in the movies, it’s rare to see what actually goes into the prep and ascent. Black Crows’ latest short Black Friar turns that notion on its head, detailing Christina Lustenberger, Johanna Stalnacke, and Tom Grant’s effort to bag the first descent of a mega BC couloir they named Black Friar. Skiing the line required careful recon, a glacier camp, and booting straight up into the belly of the beast. Conditions were great, except for one icy crux that forced the skiers to break out the rope mid-descent.
