Just a few days ago, we saw authorities in California covering skateparks with sand to deter social distance-violating crowds from forming in public spaces. Now, a similar approach is being used on top of Colorado’s Loveland Pass to deter backcountry recreationalists from congregating. On Sunday, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) used snow to build barricades preventing access to parking lots at the popular easy access backcountry skiing destination.
RELATED: Now Is Not The Time to Try Backcountry Skiing
Colorado is under a state-wide stay-at-home order, but large amounts of skiers and snowboarders were seen congregating in parking lots on Loveland Pass over the weekend. The move was seen as the only viable alternative to completely closing the road over the pass.
This serves as reminder that while backcountry recreation may seem enticing during COVID-19, if you choose to go out, please make sure you follow all social distancing guidelines, and most of all stay safe in the dangerous environment of the mountains.
