What is the rowdy, wildly ablaze SheepTown Drag Race?
Grab your bike and get ready to pedal before the flames getcha
The town of Hailey, ID, developed as a result of the mining boom and built a reputation for rowdy community social gatherings. The SheepTown Drag Race, in a sense, is an extension of the town’s heritage, and it all started from the love of biking...and drinking beer.
Power House Pub & Bike Fit Studio are the brainchilds of Billy Olson who was an avid bike racer in his younger years. After retiring from competitive racing, he began work as a bike mechanic where people would bring six packs of beer and hang out while their bikes were tuned up. This spurred his idea to combine a pub and bike shop, which Olson later opened in Hailey. The shop refuels customers with more than 130 beer options, grass-fed beef and an assortment of homemade food options. It’s the hub for biking culture and community events in Hailey.
Returning in all of its flaming glory, the infamous SheepTown Drag Race will return to the streets of Hailey June 25, 2015 hosted by Olson’s Power House Pub & Bike Fit Studio. Participants gather at dusk, and with the grills smoking and beer pouring, the biking community lines Main Street to witness the rowdy race. As two bikers line up at the start gate, the Hailey Fire Department pours gasoline on large logs chained to the bikers and sets them ablaze. At the race official’s command, riders charge full-throttle to the finish line. Racers advance through a tournament bracket style of head-to-head dashes until the winner emerges victorious. The event is open to the public on a first-come first-race basis with no entry fee. All you need to race is a bike and quads of steel.
The 5th Annual Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival will ignite with the SheepTown Drag Race as the unofficial kickoff party. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m. where racers sign their nomme de guerre (alias) on the line and assume that persona for the rest of the evening. Participants and spectators may enjoy Sierra Nevada and Ninkasi beer all evening. Racing begins at about 7:30 p.m. and continues until there is one last man or woman standing. Awards to follow at the Power House Pub.
