This 310-mile Vermont Gravel Ride is One Hell of a Sufferfest

May 30th was supposed to be race day for the 15th Annual Dirty Kanza gravel race in Kansas, which is heralded by the ultra-endurance cycling community as the crème de la crème of gravel races. As with most things this year, the race was rescheduled because of COVID-19 concerns. A few racers weren’t content to wait and craftily ideated their own sufferfests to ride instead.

One of those riders, Ted King, sought to traverse across Vermont, starting at the northeastern corner and ending at the southeast corner. His nonstop epic encompassed 310 miles, climbed more than 34,000 feet, and required a whole lot of tenacity. While it certainly wasn’t a walk in the park for King, it pushed him as a rider in ways he didn’t know was possible, which is what you hope for from a good challenge.
