Video: The View From Everest While Standing In Line to Summit

Climbing Everest from the Nepalese side turned into a bit of a zoo this year, with short weather windows and record number of climbers leading to dangerous overcrowding near the summit. We saw pictures of dozens of climbers standing in line to reach the top of the world, and world-wide media reported on the crowds and issues. In total, 11 climbers died on the mountain this year.

British expedition leader Tim Mosedale has climbed Everest six times. This year, he returned again, and recounted what he experienced on the mountain to the BBC. Mosedale talks about how inexperienced and ill-equipped climbers tend to hold up the line on the fixed ropes up high. He points out how simple changes in etiquette – like stepping over the rope to rest – could eliminate the dangerous delays other climbers face.

All in all, while much of the world seems to have written the Everest climbing scene off, Mosedale stays optimistic, urging other expedition leaders to implement sustainable solutions for climbing in this part of the world.
