When Rafael Pease grew up, he didn’t watch Cartoon Network like the rest of us – he was more a fan of The Discovery Channel. As he got older, he began craving a deeper connection to nature, ultimately leading him to chase his dream of becoming a professional snowboarder. For him, being out in the mountains isn’t about collecting likes and sponsors, it’s about sharing the joy of being in wild places with friends like what he shared Ryan Hudson and Jeremy Jones in Mountain Revelations. But, he recognizes the difficulty that people of color face in getting to experience the moments he craves, and is working to help make that community more inclusive by calling on the industry to bring on more athletes and have media be more representative of this ever-growing community. “We’re in the awkward phase of inclusivity, but it’s the only way forward,” he says.
