Hello everyone, and welcome to Episode Six of Stumpy's Blast From The Past. In Episode Six, we explore more of the evolution of the helmet camera (or Point Of View/POV).
Before I go further, understand I am not claiming we invented the POV shot on skis. That distinction lies somewhere between John Jay and his prowess for skiing behind (or in front) of the skier in his films from the '50s and '60s. He was followed by Joe Jay Jalbert, who mounted GSAP cameras to his downhill skis and skied courses like the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbuhel. Joe Jay went on to mount the GSAP cameras to helmets for his amazing freestyle films of the 70's. Dick Barrymore also followed suit.
What I am showing here is merely our migration from Bell and Howell Eyemo's to GSAP cameras (Gun Sight Aiming Point cameras designed to strap to the wing of WWII bomber planes which were activated when the pilot dropped his bombs to assess the damage.)
We were underfunded dirtbag ski filmmakers, so we had to make due with what we had: windsurf harnesses. Duct tape. Wind-up cameras. A far cry from the Sony Action Cameras and GoPros of today.
The show tells our story of POV evolution. So next time you play with your Sony Action Cam or your GoPro that weighs two ounces and takes HD photography... well count your lucky stars for technology.
Hope you enjoy.
