Video: Two Idaho Houses Destroyed By Wet Slab Avalanches

The snowpack in Idaho's Wood River Valley has been destabilized by rising temperatures and rainfall, significantly increasing the risk of wet slab avalanches in the area. As of April 9, 2019, avalanche danger is 'High' per the Sawtooth Avalanche Center.

Two unoccupied houses were destroyed yesterday, April 8, 2019, by wet slab slides in the Warm Springs Creek drainage west of Ketchum, ID. The slides blocked roads, and were powerful enough to move the two homes 10-15 feet from their foundations. Trees up to 18 inches in diameter were swept up in the slide, which piled up about 40 feet of debris. For more information, check out Sawtooth Avy's report on the event.
