Ultra-Human Kilian Jornet Just Won the Hardrock 100 With A Dislocated Shoulder

At this point, most of us know about how much of a badass Spanish ski mountaineer and ultra-runner Kilian Jornet is. He regularly wins endurance races all over the world, smashed the speed record on mountains like Denali and Everest, and now has proven himself to be something of a divine entity. On mile 13 of this year’s Hardrock 100 race, Jornet fell descending a snowfield and dislocated his shoulder. In true fashion, he got up, popped it back in himself, and won the race. After trading leads with Joe Grant and Mike Foote for many miles, he finally took off and won with a time of just over 24 hours.

The Hardrock 100 is one of the gnarliest races on the planet, traversing 100.5 miles of terrain through Colorado’s San Juan mountains, with 66,000 feet of elevation change. Competitors not only run on dirt roads, but must negotiate technical terrain through snow and rock, deal with high altitude, and withstand Colorado’s notoriously bad mountain weather. This is Jornet’s fourth time winning the race.

“I’m very happy to have won, especially because I really didn’t think I could finish today because my shoulder was hurting a lot but in the end I managed to carry on and cross the finish line. That aside, I felt good throughout the race, although it’s been without question really tough. I had to race hard against Mike and Joe but that’s what I like about these races,” said Jornet.
