Are Utah’s Salt Flats Disappearing?

If you've driven west from Salt Lake City, you've crossed the Bonneville Salt Flats. This expansive area is iconic. It's featured in hundreds of car and truck commercials. It's home to Speed Week, an international car race sponsored by the Southern California Timing Association.

Unfortunately, the Bonneville Salt Flats are also home to large-scale potassium extraction, which reduces the salt content in the sand and increases its moisture. The Bureau of Land Management has come under fire for its stewardship of the salt flats, particularly after Speed Week was cancelled for the second year in a row. 

Scientists weigh in on the environmental impact of both the recreational racing and mining.
