Austrian alpinist David Lama has a penchant for extreme solo climbs in the nastiest mountains on Earth. This fall, he claimed the first ascent of Lunag Ri, a 6,907-meter peak on the border of Nepal and Tibet. He climbed alone.
Along the way, he filmed the climb with a POV camera and was followed by a drone piloted from advanced base camp far below. Lama had attempted the mountain twice previously with Conrad Anker, once in 2015, and once in 2016 when Anker suffered a heart attack mid-climb and was forced to evacuate. Lama knew he had to return, and trusted his skills and speed as a climber to finish the mountain alone.
