Director Spike Jonze Talks About How Skateboarding Shaped His Life

Spike Jonze, the man behind several critically acclaimed and highly successful Hollywood films and dozens of legendary music videos, is first and foremost a skateboarder. Jonze directed films like Being John Malkovich and Her (which won him an Oscar), and created music videos for the likes of the Beastie Boys. Deep into his incredibly storied career as an actor, director, producer, writer, and filmer, Viceland’s new series Epicly Later’d took a stab at deciphering who Jonze is. Well, turns out that the skater kid inside of him still shines through, and his early days with a video camera shooting his friends are what influenced him the most.
