Jared Leto, a well-known actor ("Suicide Squad", "Dallas Buyer's Club", "American Psycho"), took a break from celebrity fame to produce a cool web series called Great Wide Open. The five-part series celebrates America's National Parks and the incredible athletes who explore them—and it's actually pretty damn good.
He rappelled off El Cap with Tommy Caldwell, simul-climbed 16 pitches with Renan Ozturk, and in this video, he climbs Matthes Crest and Cathedral Peak in Tuolumne and does a little free soloing with Alex Honnold.
I love how solid Leto is out there. I honestly don't think many celebs would be able to hack it in Yosemite, but he pushes his way through and has a great attitude and appreciation for some of the world's most famous climbing athletes at the same time. I also love how psyched he gets on climbing throughout the series.
"I mean fuck." Leto says while standing on a summit with Honnold, "Those were some smart mother fuckers who fought to keep this wild." He's talking about Yosemite National Park. And he's right. Those were some smart mother fuckers.
I always love watching Honnold videos because he has that kind of personality you can catch right away. He doesn't hold back—he is who he is, unapologetically.
We get to hear Honnold's story— how his dad died when Honnold was in college. He was 55-years-old and running through an airport and had a heart attack. That had a big impact on how Alex looks at risk. "Thinking about my dad and what he would have liked to have done with his life made me so aware that everyone's time will be cut short at some point," Honnold says, "The important thing is what you do with your time."
