Fact: Fifty years ago, climbing was much gnarlier than today.
Sure, people are climbing harder routes these days, but in 1968, it was still a guaranteed full-on adventure. That’s exactly what the Fun Hogs – Yvon Chouinard, Doug Tompkins, Chris Jones, Dick Dorworth, and Lito Tejada-Flores – were in for during their legendary 5,000-mile road trip from California to Patagonia in 1968. Their goal was to summit Cerro Fitz Roy, but they knew the trip would encompass so much more than that.

Mountain of Storms could be considered the blueprint for the modern adventure flick. Shot entirely on 16mm camera, it documents the trials and tribulations of climbing a big mountain – including lots of gnar like spending weeks bivying in an ice cave waiting for weather to clear. Talk about character building. It’s really no wonder that Chouinard went on to create two of the most prominent companies in the outdoor industry: Patagonia and what is now Black Diamond Equipment.
