Whether it’s climbing a frozen Niagara Falls, ephemeral ice on Kilimanjaro, or rappelling into ice caves beneath Greenland’s ice sheet, Canadian pro ice climber Will Gadd knows how to adventure in ways most others don’t. For this particular project, Gadd teamed up with a team of scientists to study how Greenland’s melting ice sheet contributes to sea level rise. They descended into meltwater caverns – called moulins – to study what happens to the water when it leaves the surface. Looks like scary combination of spelunking and ice climbing.

Of course, many athletes use their platforms to advocate for changes in climate policy, but Gadd was able to directly use his skills as an ice climber to better enable research in harsh environments.
