Video: Deep Water Soloing in Ha Long Bay Vietnam

Psicobloc – better known to most as deep water soloing – might be one of the most exciting aspects of sport climbing. While not entirely “safe” it certainly allows climbers to push their limits in a much more forgiving environment than, say, climbing El Cap sans rope. Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay is one of the epicenters of this niche sport, featuring the highest concentration of rock above water and some of the most unique climbs in world – things like the 5.13 Lightning Crack.

When psicobloc pioneer Tim Emmett met up with competition climber Kyra Condie in Vietnam, it was clear it would be a session for the ages. Emmett talks about dealing with fear while climbing high off the deck, and passing the torch to the younger Condie. Louder Than 11’s film is about facing fear, kindling relationships, and learning something new – and features some of the coolest climbing we’ve seen in awhile.
