Video: Chris Burkard Wrestles Off-Widths With Alex Honnold

Did you know that Chris Burkard is a bit of a climbing freak? Like Chris Burkard – the instafamous adventure and outdoor photographer? Well, turns out he’s into a bit of elective suffering. Specifically the kind where you wedge as much of your body as you can into off-width cracks high above the ground in an attempt to climb them.

In his words: “I want to hug this thing…I want granite to be all up in my freakin’ mouth!”

Or better yet: “You’re basically as close to making love to the Captain as you possibly can, that’s why we do it!”

Well, what better person to join him on his next adventure than Alex Honnold? Who, in his words, thinks “off-width climbing sucks.” I can’t really disagree. So naturally, the two pack their bags full of #4’s and #5’s, and head off deep into Yosemite to tackle the valley’s hardest cracks and keep bumping those precious cams high over their heads. Turns out that it’s some of the worst – and most rewarding – climbing there is.
