Use The A.L.P.T.R.U.T.H. System To Make Sure Your Next Line is Safe

Zahan Billimoria from Exum Mountain Guides, and a regular guide for TGR and instructor at our annual International Pro Riders' Workshop, breaks down the acronym-based system for deciding whether or not the backcountry run you're about to drop is a safe option: A.L.P.T.R.U.T.H.

A bit of a backcountry gut check, ALPTRUTH forces you to go through a simple mental checklist that accounts for things like recent snow, wind, and the path you're about to take.  0, 1 or 2 of the obvious signs? Employ normal caution. 3 or 4 obvious signs? Employ extreme caution. 5, 6 or 7 obvious signs? Not recommended.
