Two Backcountry Endurance Events In The Green Mountains

The month of March offers two daunting backcountry ski events to test your outdoor endurance in the Green Mountains, both of which raise funds for worthy cause. In this episode of Wintry Mix Alex Kaufman first sat down with Yurij Bihun from the Camel's Hump Challenge. The Camel's Hump Challenge is a 13 mile ski and traverse around the perimeter of the iconic Camel's Hump peak, one of the highest peaks in Vermont that doesn't have lift access located just south of Burlington. This event came into fruition back in 1986 and proceeds go to the Vermont chapter of the Alzheimers Association. Most people use a sort of rugged cross-country ski with full or partial edges that can be used for the climb, traverse, and downhill ski portion of the challenge. So start training and register for the event at Camelshumpchallenge.com.

Alex then sat down with down with R.J. Thompson who's kicking off a new event with a company called Native Endurance called 24 hours of Bolton. The event is a 24 hour backcountry ski and splitboard race this coming March 19 and 20 up at Bolton Valley Vermont. The race consists of two loops, a day time loop where they start in the Bolton Backcountry and once the sun sets racers will transition to the night time course in the Bolton alpine terrain. Then once the sun rises the next morning racers will transition back into the daytime backcountry terrain to finish out the race. If your feeling really hardcore you can do the entire 24 hour race by yourself, as well as the option for two person and four person relays and a 12 hour division if your not feeling up to the grueling 24 hour suffer-fest. R.J claims that this is the only 24 hour endurance backcountry ski race of its kind going on in North America this year, and is proud to be putting the Bolton backcountry and the Green Mountains on the map.
