A tragic incident Yosemite National Park has resulted in the death of a hiker after being struck by a falling tree branch. The accident occurred on the popular Tuolumne Grove Trail, a trail known for its majestic giant sequoias.
On Tuesday, July 19, 2025, Angela Lin, a 29-year-old software engineer from the Bay Area, was hiking with her boyfriend and two friends when the unfortunate event took place. According to her boyfriend, David Hua, the group heard a loud crack before a large branch fell, striking Lin. Hua administered CPR until a park ranger arrived, but tragically, Lin succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The Tuolumne Grove Trail was temporarily closed following the incident but has since reopened to the public. Yosemite National Park officials have stated that the incident is currently under investigation, though a formal press release has not yet been issued.

Hua has expressed his deep sorrow and frustration, seeking more information from the National Park Service regarding the incident and future preventative measures. "Losing Angela so suddenly and so young is a devastating loss for her family, friends and community, and no words can describe the shock and grief we are all experiencing,” Hua shared in a statement to SFGATE.
This unfortunate accident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks present in the natural world, even on well-traveled trails. Falling trees and branches are a known hazard in forested areas. The National Park Service website provides general safety information for visitors, advising them to be aware of their surroundings, especially in areas with large trees.
