Tourists Flock to Reopened Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks

The gates which provide access to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks opened to the public for the first time in 55 days at 11:45 AM on Monday. Cars had begun lining up before sunrise, according to the Jackson Hole News and Guide, prompting rangers to open the gates 15 minutes before the planned noon reopening. And the cars weren't Wyomingites excited to return to their backyard: In an interview with The Guardian, Teton County resident Mark Segal speculated that he was the only local visiting the Park, based on the prominence of out-of-state license plates.

The town of Jackson, through which visitors to the Parks are being funneled, has seen a spike in out-of-state visitors, a trend which many expect to continue. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are now in Phase 1 of their three-phase plan, which opens the Parks' basic services such as roads, public restrooms, gas stations, and other critical services. For more information on the three-phase plan for reopening the Parks, see the official National Park Service Yellowstone Reopening Plan here.
