The Waiting Game: Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe Delays Opening Day
Popular Stories
The anticipation is palpable as winter enthusiasts across the West Coast wait for the first turns of the 2025/26 season. Unfortunately for those eager to carve up the slopes, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe has officially announced a delay to its planned opening. The resort, which sits high on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, will not be spinning its lifts on the originally scheduled date of November 8th.
A Fickle Mother Nature
Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe typically prides itself on its high base elevation of 8,260 feet, often making it one of the very first resorts in the Tahoe region to open. Historically, the resort has kicked off the season in early to mid-November. However, a recent stretch of warmer temperatures has interfered with their snowmaking operations.
While the mountain received a welcome 6 inches of fresh snow recently, it is not enough to open. The resort needs to achieve a sustained, packed base depth of 12 to 14 inches to offer a quality ski experience, typically allowing the Lakeview Express to run.
Snow Guns Primed for Cooler Air
The good news is that the forecast shows promising signs for the coming week. Colder temperatures are anticipated, which is critical for the Mt. Rose crew to crank up their snowmaking system. This means the wait might not be too long. The resort's high elevation is a significant advantage, and as the cold air settles in, we can expect to see those snow guns working around the clock to build up the base.

What's Next for Tahoe Skiers
Mt. Rose has promised to keep the public updated as the new opening day approaches. For now, keep your gear prepped, your passes ready, and your eyes on the snow reports.
Other Tahoe resorts are also gearing up, with some projecting opening dates later in November. This situation highlights the unpredictability of early-season freeride, but the anticipation builds the stoke for when the chairs finally spin. Remember, these are the days we live for. The first deep turns of the season are well worth the wait.
