Colter Hinchliffe

Who are you?

C: Colter Hinchliffe, 39. From a little place called Aspen.

Most memorable line/trick you dropped or stomped in this film?

C: We had one really great evening session when we found a zone that had decent snow which had been hard to find. After a few runs on more mellow lines I gained confidence that the snow was indeed O.K., and I eyed up a cherry. It was a beautiful line with some skinnier spines up top and a big sexy broad spine below. It was the highlight of my winter: that afternoon, and specifically that spine.

Run us through your gear. Any hacks or must-have travel items?

C: I never leave home without my Völkl 121 skis with kingpins. That is my go-to ski if the snow is soft and I absolutely love skiing the kingpin. I actually pefer it to alpine bindings because it's so touchy light and responsive. Then I'm always ready to go uphill if I wanna hit that cliff again!

What's your ritual before dropping a big line?

C: Visualize, tell myself I'll prolly survive, and then black out and drop.

How does filming with TGR compare to a normal ski/ride day with friends?

C: It's all the same, just a little slower pace cause there are two or three other athletes getting filmed, not just me making my friends film me with their iPhones.

Who or what inspired you most on this trip?

C: Honestly I was the most inspired by the scene on Thompson Pass (AK). That is what I based my whole winter on; driving up there with my sled to camp and be a part of that scene. It was inspiring to see how many rad people are up there uyear after year living in a parking lot shredding the sickest lines every day. The culture is rad and the soul of skiing is very alive there.

Looking ahead, what's on the horizon for you?

C: I wanna keep doing this for as long as I can. I'm not getting any younger, but I think I'm getting smarter! I have also been working on getting a segment done in the Republic of Georgia. I've been there twice now and it keeps blowing my mind but the logistics are tough. Maybe this is the year!
