“The Director” – Chronicles: The Making of Proximity Episode 1

In the spring of 2017, global youth-culture media leader Teton Gravity Research (TGR) and Garage Entertainment will unveil Proximity, a new multimedia project that pairs surfing’s living legends with today’s most progressive young surfers. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Taylor Steele, Proximity showcases present-day surfing icons from different generations in diverse locations around the world.

Today, fans get an exclusive, behind-the scenes glimpse of Proximity’s personalities, places, and production in the first episode of Chronicles - The Making of Proximity. Presented by LifeProof, the four-episode, mobile-first series will kick start the journey toward Proximity’s cinematic climax.

“I feel like my entire body of work has been building towards this production,” Steele says. “This unique creative union with TGR and Garage Media came from our desire to do something in surfing that hasn't been done before. Utilizing the latest technology, traveling to the far corners of the globe with my favorite surfers, and presenting in film, photos, virtual reality, and print media. It’s pretty much my dream project.”

Steele, surfing’s most prolific and respected film director, began his career filming the young Kelly Slater and has been immortalizing surf culture for more than 25 years. Proximity is his first surf film in four years, and is poised to be his crowning achievement.

“Not only is Proximity the product of surfing’s greats,” says TGR’s CEO Todd Jones, “but it was produced using modern 4k and VR cameras that capture epic cinematography from land, sea, and air. It is shaping up to be the most eye-catching project I have had the opportunity to work on. TGR is truly proud to be involved.”
