Feel that? The days are getting shorter, the air is getting a little crisper in the high country, and the unofficial start of the pre-season hype train has officially left the station. Mammoth Mountain just dropped the date we've all been waiting for, setting its target opening day for Friday, November 14, 2025.
That’s 99 days from today.
For those of us squeezing in the last few weeks of mountain biking and summer adventures, 99 days might feel like an eternity. But for the dedicated skier or snowboarder, the clock is now officially ticking.
Of course, setting an opening date in early August is always a delicate dance with Mother Nature. An uncooperative warm spell can throw a wrench in the works, while an early season mega-storm could have the lifts spinning ahead of schedule. We've all seen it happen.
Mammoth isn't just throwing a dart at the calendar. With a powerhouse snowmaking system and a killer track record, they have a reliable plan B. According to the Mammoth Snowman, a website that tracks historical opening days, the resort hasn't opened later than November since 1986. That’s a level of consistency we can get behind.

A November 14th opening places Mammoth firmly among the early-season leaders in North America. While we’ll be watching Colorado’s race-to-open contenders like Arapahoe Basin and Wolf Creek, who sometimes fire things up in October, Mammoth’s announcement signals the true start of the broader resort opening season. Expect more resorts to follow suit and drop their dates in the coming weeks.
Until then, we have a date. We have a countdown. It’s the light at the end of the summer tunnel, and for skiers and snowboarders, that's everything.
