The Return of Gus Kenworthy
Milan-Cortina will be Gus Kenworthy’s 4th Olympic Games. His breakout performance at the 2014 Winter Games earned him a silver medal. Now, slipping out from under the veil of retirement, Kenworthy is giving competitive skiing one last shot.
"After taking a step away, I realised I miss skiing and I really want to compete again," the then 33-year-old said in an interview with ESPN.
"I didn't know if I would be able to come back after three-and-a-half years, but I knew I wouldn't be able to after seven and a half. So, it's this Olympics or nothing. I'm never going to have this opportunity again."
One of the top freeskiers in the world, Kenworthy's influence extends beyond podiums and into the mainstream culture. The first openly gay action sports star, he became a visible ambassador in the early years of a post-acceptance world.
While freeskiers often expect careers that burn bright and short, Kenworthy has maintained his tenacity. Now he's throwing all the logs on the fire for one last Olympic appearance.
"I don't feel like I'm going back into it because I don't know who I am otherwise... I'm going back into it because I can still do it, and because I want to."
Gus's love of skiing shines through loud and clear. We can't wait to see what he'll pull out of his bag of tricks this time. If his podium performance at The Snow League China is any indication: expect big things.
