Following the massive mudslide that took out a huge chunk of Teton Pass last summer, WYDOT has scheduled the finishing touches on the road that connects Jackson to Teton Valley.

Just over a year ago, we all watched as a section of Teton Pass failed, sending a torrent of mud and debris down the mountainside. The crucial route connecting Jackson, Wyoming, with the communities of Teton Valley, Idaho — used daily by commuters and backcountry enthusiasts — was cut off.The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) crews worked tirelessly to construct a temporary bypass, reopening the pass in record time. Now, the time has come to lay the final pavement on the reconstructed section of roadway.

The final closure is scheduled from 6 p.m. on Friday, June 27, through 6 a.m. on Monday, June 30. Crews will be working 24/7 to mill, grade, lay crushed base, and pave the new section. They'll also be installing new guardrails and signage to get the pass ready for the summer rush. The closure was originally planned for the weekend of the 21st, but recent rain delayed preparations. To ensure crews would be ready for the condensed weekend schedule — and to avoid disrupting weekday commuters — WYDOT postponed the work to the following weekend.

For all the bikers and hikers out there, don't worry, you'll still have some access. The Coal Creek Campground on the west side of the pass and the top of Teton Pass from the east side will remain open. However, WYDOT is urging everyone to be mindful of heavy machinery and construction traffic in the area.

While the goal is to get the job done in one weekend, mother nature always has the final say. WYDOT will be providing updates on the status of WY22 throughout the weekend.
